I had the pleasure of attending a private estate sale in Moraga Estates, which is a gated community in the hills of Bel Air, CA. This is from the estate of a prosperous philanthropic family. The designer of the 8,000 sq ft home was noted architect and designer Cleo Baldon (the house was furnished by Cleo’s classic and iconic furniture) whose brother and sister in law were the home owners. They had an amazing collection of napkin ring holders and this is one. An antique Victorian silver plate napkin ring from Rogers Smith Meridian Silver Co. Unusual, it depicts two little boys with their arms raised holding the diamond shaped napkin ring with ornate designs and pierced edges. It is on a square base with four ball feet and it has a monogram of LMD. It is in nice condition except for needing polishing. Measures about 3″ tall x 3 1/4″ x 2 1/4 and weighs 5.6 oz before packing. They had an amazing collection of napkin ring holders, Asian art, jewelry and modern art. The Connecticut manufacturing process was immediately embraced by New York’s moneyed crowd, advertised as all the advantages of silver in durability and beauty at one-fifth the cost. These pieces were in my family’s silver collection that I recently inherited. I recall polishing the silver as a young girl over 70 years ago. I was always told it came from my great, great grandmother Georgianna Mott. The family were diamond merchants on Mott Street in NYC. She lived in New York except in the summers when the family cooled off in the Berkshires of Stockbridge, MA. One of their homes was in Greenwich Village which later became the home of her son Henry Allen Seymour and daughter in law, Helen Deming. The history is known on this silver. The 1862 date is stamped on the bottoms of some pieces. One of the original teapots is missing, damaged in a move nearly 50 years ago. The silver plated, more modern tray in the first photo is NOT for sale, Not included, only used for dimensions and appearance. One notice, the teapot always had a marking on the side that it was once repaired but this had to be before 1947 when it was given to my father; as the one assigned to polishing it in our home, I always noticed it.
