The term chest of ladles is used to describe a lot of ladles of different sizes. This term comes from a time when silver was locked away when not in use, usually in some kind of chest. I neither solicit nor accept offers. Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. 1847 Rogers Vintage was the premier pre-World War I silverplate pattern, being made from 1904 until 1918. In this pattern, popularly called Vintage Grape, there are over 100 different pieces, both place and serving. The sales for Vintage exceeded that of any pattern until First Love appeared in 1937. Vintage is an Art Nouveau design of grapes, tendrils, vines and leaves in a well-balanced handle that fits the hand beautifully. Soup ladles came in a variety of sizes. They were used for serving both soup and other soup- like foods such as stew. The size is what distinguishes the ladles from one another. The true punch ladle is a special form, with a wide, deep, and narrow bowl with pour lips. The largest of the true soup ladles is called the soup , the next is the medium, then comes the oyster ladle, and the smallest is the bouillon. The punch ladle with separate pouring spouts seems to have been introduced in the 1880s, and most silverplate sets did not have them. Other types of ladle include the sauce ladle, the gravy ladle, the mustard, and the mayonnaise. Old sets of china have numerous tureens, all with specific functions, and the ladles were meant to go in them. Selecting a ladle for a tureen is not as easy as it sounds. The ladle must be much bigger than seems logical. This is so the ladle does not accidentally become drowned in the soup, which is both and embarrassment and sort of funny. There is no gracious way of bringing it back to the surface. Generally, the tureen sits in front of the host who ladles the soup into soup bowls or plates and passes them down the table. Passing a full tureen around is both heavy and awkward. The four ladles offered here and their approximate measurements are as follows: large soup ladle about 11, bouillon/small soup ladle about 9 1/2″, gravy ladle about 7 1/2″, and sauce ladle about 5 1/2. These are not pieces of new silver. They show the patina of as much as 115 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. The pattern is crisp and clear. The gravy ladle and the large soup ladle show the patina of more use. The bouillon and gravy ladles are marked A1. The large soup ladle and the sauce ladle are marked XS Triple. I will of course take responsibility for items that arrive damaged or if there is a serious error in the listing.
